"On the third day of the American bombardment of Baghdad in 1991, particularly targeting the Republic Bridge in the city's heart, an unusual scene unfolded. A dead cow lay on one of the fallen sections of the bridge—an uncommon sight in central Baghdad. Almost two decades later, I contemplate the tragic circumstances leading to her demise, imagining her futile attempts to jump across in a desperate bid to reach the other side."
